Hoy os voy a hablar de Karlos Arguiñano, un icono nacional. ¿Qué quién es? Pues nuestro Jamie Oliver español. En nuestro país es queridísimo, y es que su carácter risueño, sus cánticos en directo y sus chistes verdes le han hecho meterse al público en el bolsillo. Siempre que uno enciende la la tele a la hora de comer ahí está él, como un miembro más de la familia, canturreando mientras cocina y, sobre todo,disfrutando de la vida. A sus 60 años es el claro ejemplo de que la juventud no la marca la edad sino la mentalidad que uno tenga.

Karlos Arguiñano es una de esas personas que triunfa en todos los proyectos que realiza. Sus libros de cocina fácil son todo un éxito y como empresario le está yendo muy bien con su Escuela de Hostelería Profesional y su restaurante, situado en el País Vasco. Pero a Arguiñano no le basta con todo esto y con promocionar la cocina española en países como Suecia, Alemania o Estados Unido, no, también ha hecho sus pinitos como actor. Así, le podéis ver en “Año Mariano” o “El Rey de la Granja”, películas españolas. Polifacético y adorable, Karlos Arguiñano es todo un icono nacional.

Today I'm going to talk about Karlos Arguiñano, a national icon. Who is he? Well, he's our Spanish Jamie Oliver and he´s beloved in our country due to his cheerful personality. His live singing and dirty jokes have got the audience eating out of his hand. Whenever one turns on the tv at lunch time there he is, like another member of the family, singing while cooking, and above all, enjoying life. In his sixties he is living proof that you're only as old as you want to be.

Karlos Arguiñano is one of those persons that succeedes in every project he embarks on. His easy cooking books are a hit and as an entrepreneur he's doing great with his Catering College and his restaurant, located in País Vasco. But Arguiñano doesn't have enough with promoting Spanish food in countries such as Sweden, Germany or the States, no, he has also made severak cameos in some movies. You can see him in “Año Mariano” or “El Rey de la Granja”, Spanish films. Versatile and lovable, Karlos Arguiñano is a national icon.

LA FINAL DE OPERACIÓN TRIUNFO

Tengo que admitirlo: hace semanas que dejé de ver "Operación Triunfo". ¿Por qué? Pues porque se estaba convirtiendo en "Gran Hermano", es decir, se emitían más peleas entre los concursantes que música. Me da rabia, porque este año han hecho algunas versiones de música más alternativa, como el “Creep” de Radiohead, aunque también es verdad que han destrozado grandes canciones como el “Smells like teen Spirit” de Nirvana. Pero, música aparte, y dado que mi blog trata de España, no he podido evitar comentar algo sobre la final. Y es que ha sido muy polémica y todo el mundo habla de ella, bueno, más bien de ellos: Virginia y Risto.

Os voy a poner un poco al día de quiénes son Virginia y Risto...Risto forma parte del jurado de Operación Triunfo, y su fama de borde por hacer crueles comentarios sobre los concursantes le ha categorizado como el malo de OT. Es publicista, ha trabajado para Britney Spears, U2, Radiohead...vamos, que es un pez gordo. Por otro lado está Virginia, la sevillana que encandiló a Risto (y esto es algo difícil de conseguir) desde el primer casting. Sus grandes ojos azules y su voz tan característica le llamaron la atención hasta el punto de halagarla diciéndole que ella era “el primer producto acabado de OT”. Y razón no le faltó, porque Virginia ha ganado el concurso.

¿Y por qué está hablando hoy todo el mundo de ellos dos? Pues por dos razones: por un lado porque antes de ayer (en la final) Risto desapareció del plató minutos antes de que acabara el programa y sin que nadie supiera por qué. De hecho el presentador del programa, Jesús Vázquez, se cabreó por tal falta de respeto...Y Risto consiguió de nuevo su objetivo: que todo el mundo hable de él. Por otro lado, la gente habla de Virginia porque ganó sin ser apoyada por sus compañeros. Cuando dijeron su nombre se quedaron todos quietos, y solo dos o tres fueron a darle la enhorabuena. La pobre Virginia se tuvo que tirar a los brazos de Mónica Naranjo, una cantante española muy conocida, porque nadie la abrazaba...qué panorama.

I've got to admit it, I haven't watched “Operación Triunfo” for weeks. Why is that? Well, because it was turning into “Big Brother”, fights between the contestants were outnumbering the amount of music performances being broadcast. It's a pity because this year they did good alternative cover songs like “Creep”, by Radiohead, although they also destroyed several great songs like “Smells like teen spirit”, by Nirvana. Leaving music aside, and bearing in mind that my blog deals with Spain, I can't help writing about the final. It's been very controversial and everybody is talking about it, well rather about them: Virginia and Risto.

I'll give you an update on who Virginia and Risto are...Risto is part of the jury of the programme and he is infamous for being mean to the contestants, earning him the title of “OT's bad guy”. He is an advertising executive, has worked for Britney Spears, U2, Radiohead...He's a fat cat. On the other side is Virginia, the sevillian girl who fascinated Risto (and that's quite a difficult thing to do) from the first audition. Her big blue eyes and special voice caught his eye so much that he praised her by saying that she was “the first finished product of OT”. And he was right because she is the winner of the show.

And why is everybody talking about Risto and Virginia? For two reasons: on the one hand, because the day before yesterday (on the final) Risto disappeared from the set minutes before the winner was announced and no one knowing why. In fact the show host, Jesús Vázquez, was mad at him for being so disrespectful. Risto achieved his aim: keep everybody talking about him. On the other hand, everybody is talking about Virginia because she won without having her mates' support. When her name was announced everybody stayed still and only two or three of her mates congratulated her...what a scene!

¿Os acordáis del post en el que comenté que siempre he envidiado a la gente bilingüe? Pues bien, Leonor Watling es una de esas personas. Aunque por su apellido parezca extranjera, ella en realidad es española. Bueno, más bien es medio inglesa medio española ya que su madre es inglesa y su padre es gaditano. El hecho de escoger el apellido de su madre para su carrera profesional se debió a que no quería que sus hermanos y primos se viesen afectados por su fama.

La verdad es que Leonor es más conocida como actriz que como cantante. Lleva actuando desde 1993, y el salto al mundo de la música lo dio en 2004. Siguiendo su biografía se ven las grandes ventajas que le ha dado el dominar el inglés. Al acabar el instituto se fue a estudiar al Actor's Center de Londres, y ha doblado a muchas actrices españolas, incluída Penélope Cruz . Por otro lado, las canciones que compone para su grupo, "Marlango", están escritas en inglés.

Como ya he comentado, Leonor es más conocida como actriz, pero a mí personalmente me gusta más su música. Tiene una voz muy bonita y sus canciones son una mezcla de jazz, blues y rock. Es un estilo muy personal y diferente, y aunque la mayoría de sus canciones son algo melancólicas, están muy bien. "Marlango" está formado por el pianista Alejandro Pelayo y el trompetista (también bilingüe) Óscar Ybarra.

Aunque su música es lo que más me llama la atención, tengo que admitir que su última película, “Los Crímenes de Oxford”, me encantó. Dirigida por el director español Álex de la Iglesia y protagonizada por Elijah Wood (Frodo en "El Señor de los Anillos"), es una mezcla de thriller actual y los clásicos del cine negro. Fue rodada en inglés, pero la podéis encontrar doblada al español. ¡Os la recomiendo!

Do you remember the post where I mentioned that I've always had envy of bilngual people? Well, Leonor Watling is one of those people. Although her surname may make her seem like a foreigner, she's actually Spanish. Well, she is half English half Spanish because her father is from Cádiz and her mother is English. The fact of keeping her mother´s surname for her career had to do with protecting her siblings and cousins from being affected by her fame.


It is true that Leonor is better known as an actress than as a singer. She's been acting since 1993 and took the leap into the world of music in 2004. If we follow her biography closely we can see how mastering English has brought her many advantages. After graduating from high school, she moved to London to study at the Actor's Center, and she has dubbed many Spanish actresses, included Penélope Cruz. On the oher hand, the songs she's written for her band are in English.


As I've mentioned before, Leonor is better known as an actress, but personally I prefer her music. She's got a beautiful voice and her songs are a mixture of jazz, blues and rock. She's got a different and personal style, and even though most her songs are quite melancholic, they are very good. "Marlango" is formed by pianist Alejandro Pelayo and trumpet player (also bilingual) Oscar Ybarra.


Although Watling's music is what catches my attention the most, I must admit that I loved her last movie, “The Oxford Murders” . Directed by Spanish film director Alex de la Iglesia and starring Elijah Wood, (Frodo in “The Lord of the Rings”), it's a mixture of modern thrillers and “film noir” classics. It was shot in English but you can find it dubbed into Spanish. I recommend it!

UNA FORMA DISTINTA DE VIAJAR (click to listen)

Ahora que estamos en verano es un buen momento para viajar. A algunos les gusta la montaña, a otros la playa...pero parece que siempre es lo mismo, ¿no os apetecería hacer algo totalmente diferente y que una cultura, diversión y misterio? Me estoy refiriendo a esos paquetes de viajes que ya existen en países como Inglaterra o Rumanía en los que se explota de forma comercial el pasado o las leyendas de un país.

Así, en Inglaterra existen las rutas literarias, donde la gente paga para visitar la casa en la que vivió Jane Austen, o la cárcel de Reading en la que Oscar Wilde cumplió condena. Rumanía, por su parte también ha sacado partido del Drácula de Bram Stoker, y están triunfando las visitas turísticas a Transilvania para pasar miedo.

El turismo también está sacando partido del mundo del cine, y es que visitar los escenarios donde se rodaron tus películas favoritas tiene su encanto. Así, si te gustaron los paisajes de "Orgullo y Prejuicio"(Joe Wright) puedes visitar las casas solariegas donde se rodó la película. Y si tienes tiempo (y dinero) y eres fan de "El Señor de los Anillos" existen viajes organizados para ir hasta Nueva Zelanda. Una vez allí, podrás ver como las fincas ovejeras se transformaron en “La Comarca” o podrás caminar por las montañas de Mordor, toda una experiencia.

Pues bien, si queréis practicar español y tener unas vacaciones diferentes la empresa española Viajesconimaginacion.com prepara varias rutas de aventuras. Summer time is travell time. Some people like the mountain, other people prefer the beach...but it seems like it's always the same. Wouldn't you like to do something really different that combines culture, fun and mystery? I'm talking about those package tours that are so popular in countries such as England or Rumania, where the past and legends of a country are exploited from a commercial point of view.

This way, in England there are literary routes that allow people to visit the houses where Jane Austen or William Shakespeare lived, or the jail where Oscar Wilde served a sentence. Another instance is Rumania, a country which has taken advantage of Bram Stoker's Dracula, and "scary" touristic visits to Transilvania are being a success.

Tourism is also taking advantage of the cinema, because visiting the settings where your favourite movies were shot has its charm. If you liked the landscapes in "Pride and Prejudice" (Joe Wright) you can visit the real houses used as sets for the film. Another option, if you have time (and money) and you are a fan of "The Lord of the Rings" are the package tours that take you to New Zealand. Once you're there you can see how farms were transformed into “The Shire” or you'll be able to walk through the mountains of Mordor, quite an experience!

If you want to practise your Spanish while enjoying a different type of holidays the Spanish firm Viajesconimaginacion.com arranges adventure package holidays. Parece que los españoles estamos en racha, al menos en el mundo del deporte. Si hace unas semanas la selección se hizo con el título de la Eurocopa, hace unos días Rafael Nadal ganaba en la final más larga de la historia de Wimbledon. Y nada más y nada menos que contra el tenista suizo Roger Federer, número uno del mundo.

Su pelo largo y su fuerza le hicieron ganarse el apodo de Gerónimo, y es uno de los españoles más conocidos en el ámbito internacional. Y es que Rafa Nadal es un deportista muy querido, sobre todo en España. Su trayectoria profesional es impecable, tiene muchísimos récords, y además cae bien por su sencillez y humildad.

Nadal empezó a jugar a tenis con sólo 5 años, y tras ver que tenía potencial para este deporte, su tío Toni se convirtió en su entrenador y le empezó a entrenar de manera profesional. Así, con 15 años logró ser el jugador más joven de la historia en ganar un torneo oficial de la ATP. Entre sus grandes hazañas también están la de haber ganado cuatro Roland Garros de forma consecutiva y cuatro Monte Carlo TMS.

La verdad es que el tenis es un deporte muy seguido por los españoles, aunque no tanto como el fútbol. La gente no suele quedar para ver los partidos de tenis en el bar, aunque muchas personas quedan en casas para ver partidos importantes, como es el caso de la final de Wimbledon. Se podría decir que en España el tenis es un deporte más bien casero...

It seems that Spain is on a roll, at least in sports. If some weeks ago the national football team won the Euro 2008, last Sunday Rafael Nadal won in the longest singles final in Wimbledon's history. And over none other than Swiss tennis player Roger Federer, ranked World number one.

Nadal's long hair and strength earned him the nickname Geronimo, and he is one of the most well-known Spaniards at an international level. Rafa Nadal is a beloved sportsman, especially in Spain. His career is impeccable, he's beaten lots of records, and people love him for his simplicity and humility.

Rafael Nadal began playing tennis at the age of five, and after realizing he had potential, his uncle Toni became his coach and started training him seriously. This way, at 15 Nadal became the youngest tennis player in history to win an ATP. Among his great deeds it's important to point out that he won four consecutive Roland Garros and four Monte Carlo TMS.

The truth is that tennis is quite a popular sport in Spain, although it's not as big as football. People don't usually meet at bars to watch tournaments, nevertheless many people meet at home to watch the important matches, like the Wimbledon final. We could say that in Spain tennis is more of a stay-at-home sport...

Llevaba un tiempo pensando en meter podcasts en el blog. La verdad es que son una herramienta muy útil, y más cuando se trata de enseñar lenguas extranjeras. Pues bien, después de haber estado investigando cómo hacerlo durante más de una semana y de haberme peleado con los distintos programas de grabación de voz ¡por fin lo he conseguido! Si hacéis click en el post de “Modern ways to learn Languages” oiréis mi voz en casellano…De momento sólo he hecho un podcast, pero a partir de ahora iré metiendo más en todos los posts previos.

En el aprendizade de una segunda lengua es fundamental desarrollar las cuatro destrezas lingüísticas: la comprensión lectora (mediante la lectura), la expresión oral (hablando todo lo que se pueda en ese idioma), la expresión escrita (intentando escribir ) y la comprensión auditiva (realizando audiciones). Bueno, pues a partir de ahora vais a poder desarrollar vuestra comprensión auditiva a través de los podcasts de este blog. ¡Viva la tecnología!

Un buen truco para esforzar el oído es el escuchar la grabación antes de leer el texto. Siempre podéis escucharlo un par de veces para ver si más o menos habéis captado la idea general, y la tercera vez podéis escucharlo mientras leéis el texto, fijándoos más en las expresiones que desconozcáis…Y no olvidéis ir metiendo el vocabulario nuevo en el langauge routebook =)

I´ve been thinking about adding podcasts to the blog for a while. The truth is that they're extremely useful tools, especially when it comes to learning foreign languages. Well, after a week of research and fights with different sound programmes I've finally made it! If you click on the post entitled “Modern Ways to Learn Languages” you'll hear me speaking Spanish...At the moment I've just made a podcast, but from now on I'll be adding more to the previous posts.

Regarding language learning, it's essential to develop the four language skills: reading comprehension (through reading), oral comprehension (speaking as much as possible), written comprehension (writing in the foreign language) and listening comprehension (listening to the L2 ). Well, from now on you'll be able to develop your listening skills through the podcasts of this blog. Long live technology!

A good trick to improve your listening comprehension is to listen to the recording before reading the text. You can always listen to the podcast twice to see if you've got the gist, and the third time you can listen to it while reading the post, now paying attention to unknown expressions...And don't forget to write the new vocabulary on your language routebook =)
