"ESTA SOY YO" LYRICS

LETRA DE ESTA SOY YO

Here you have a link to the lyrics of the song (in Spanish)

http://www.letrascanciones.org/el-sueno-de-morfeo/el-sueno-de-morfeo/esta-soy-yo.php

English translation of the song:

And this is me (x4)

They say I am like a book without plot,
I´m all at sea
I lose myself in my dreams

They say I am a black and white photo
that I should sleep more
that my bad mood takes over me

They say I am a normal girl
I have little habits that get on people´s nerves
that I don´t know for sure where good and evil is.
where is my place

And this is me,
frightened and determined
an endangered species
as real as life itself

And this is me
my time has come
I´m not going to renounce
I dont want to lose my time

And this is me...

They say I am all at sea
Like a ship without a sea
like a soul with no body

They say I am cold hearted,
that I should laugh more and be more talktive

I dont know what you think
I´m not your Cinderella
I´m not the last piece of your unfinished puzzle
I´m not who you created
maybe you were wrong
maybe it is not the moment

And this is me frightened and ...

And now let´s have a look at some expressions:

Foto en blanco y negro: A black and white picture (notice the order of the adjectives).

Asustada y decidida: Frightened and determined.

Una especie en extinción: An endangered species (una especie, dos especies).

EL SUEÑO DE MORFEO (MORPHEUS' DREAM)

El Sueño de Morfeo is one of the most successful Spanish bands of the moment. It is formed by three members: Raquel, the lead singer and wife of Formula One racing driver Fernando Alonso, David (guitar player) and Juan Luis (also guitar player).

It all started when Raquel, from Gran Canary, moved to Asturias (north of Spain) to join David’s band (Xemá). Both of them worked at the same time as music teachers in a school in order to earn a living and launch their first album, which wasn´t successful due to little promotion.

In 2003 David and Raquel met Juan Luis and formed a new band, El Sueño de Morfeo. The name of the act was Raquel´s idea. She was impressed by the character of Morpheus, the Greek god responsible for shaping dreams. Raquel felt it was unfair that this god had to create dreams for others when he couldn’t sleep. They thought the name would be appealing, and it was indeed.

Things are going very well for the celtic act. They have released two albums and colaborated with many great artists. Currently they’re about “to conquer” the Italian music world thanks to the help of Neck, a well-known Italian singer.

The song I want to show you is called “Esta soy yo” and is one of my favourite songs. You will notice Raquel´s pronunciation. Since she is from Gran Canary, she pronounces letters “ce” and “ci” as /se/ and /si/ (i.e. the word Cenicienta= Cinderella is pronounced /senisienta/ ). This is typical of the islands and the south of Spain. However, in the rest of the country those letters are pronounced as /θe/ /θi/ (like “thin”).

I hope you enjoy the song.

ARTURO PÉREZ REVERTE

ENGLISH

I would like to start this blog with one of my favourite Spanish writers, Arturo Pérez Reverte. He cought my eye when reading his articles in El Semanal, a well-known Spanish magazine. He gave (and still gives) his opinion about anything, from current affairs to anecdotes he has on his daily life, and he does it in a witty and entertaining way. Every time I read one of his articles he transmits me the passion for reading and knowing more about the world. He is a learned man with a great gift; his words flow quite naturally.

Among succesful Spanish authors Reverte is perhaps the one with a more thrilling biography. Born in Cartagena in 1951, after he graduated in Journalism and Politics Science he became a war correspondent, a job he had for 21 years. Since 1991 he has been writing articles for El Semanal, which has earned him the reputation of being an outspoken and witty man. In 1994 he gave up his career as a reporter to devote himself exclusively to writing. Since 2003 he belongs to the Spanish Royal Academy.

Many of his novels have been adapted for the screen with great success:The Fencing Master, The Flanders Panel and The Club Dumas (The Ninth Door) , directed by Roman Polanski. However, Reverte´s most notorious hit has been Captain Alatriste book series, set in the 17th century, the Spanish Golden Age, and which was adapted into cinema, with Viggo Mortensen as lead actor.

What is fascinating about Reverte´s novels is that besides being entertaining, they are also didactic. The historical accuracy that is portrayed in his novels is the result of his eagerness to read since very lilltle. Therefore, this great author is also a great historian who knows how to mix fiction and reality to create masterpieces. Reverte´s work is really worth reading and it will leave no one indifferernt.

THE ROUTE BOOK

It is a fact that expanding your vocabulary is the best way to become proficient in a foreign language. Knowing as many words as possible can save you from embarrassing situations. Think about that interesting conversation you were holding with a Spaniard that was becoming tedious because you didn’t know how to say “arcade” (sala de juegos) and you had to explain it using too many words!

But don’t worry, I have the perfect solution for you. I made up this method several years ago and I can assure you that it is very helpful. All you need is a small notepad divided into different sections in different colours (see picture). Each section will focus on a specific language area:

-Colloquial sentences (grammar notes can be included here as well).
-Collocations (nouns with their typical adjectives).
-Adjectives.
-Verbs .

This way whenever you´re reading an article and find an interesting word that you don´t know you can write it down in the notepad. If it is a verb, in the verb section, if it is an adjective, in the adjective section and so on. It is very important to write down the meaning of the word alongside an example of the word in context, otherwise you won’t know in which situations you can use that specific word.

The good thing about this technique is that you can take it everywhere with you. This is why I call the notepad “The route- book”, because you can read it on the bus, while your computer is loading…and this way you will refresh your already memorized words. Easy and practical! I really hope it is as useful for you as it has been for me =)
